Strength training is an essential part of sports conditioning. Proper strength training has direct effects on speed, strength, agility, flexibility and endurance. Increases in these areas will positively effect an athletes level of performance, what ever the sport. General strength training in the off season is crucial to ensure an athletes abilities cross over to the playing field. An often unrealized benefit of strength training is injury prevention. Strength training improves the strength of muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones. The stronger muscles and tendons are, the less load bones and joints take when moving or under impact. Muscle imbalances are also a very common cause for injury as well. If a muscle or muscle group becomes stronger then it’s opposing muscle or group, the weaker muscles are strained and are less able to counter forces causing injury to the weaker muscles.
