The benefits of strength training for seniors.
There are many benefits to strength training as a senior. Strength training reduces the signs and symptoms of many diseases and chronic conditions including: arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, heart disease, obesity, back pain and depression. Strength training when done properly and through the full range of motion will increase a persons strength, flexibility, and balance. A senior with increases in these areas will have more muscle mass, bone density, and stronger more pliable tendons and ligaments, this all equals increased ability, mobility, balance and a reduction of falls that lead to fractures and broken bones.
Strength training increases muscle mass, which directly increases one’s metabolic rate. This is crucial in maintaining proper weight especially as we get older. Studies now show that lifestyle changes such as strength training have a positive impact on helping older people manage their diabetes.
Strength training increases cardiac health because heart disease risk is lowered when the body is leaner. One study showed that cardiac patients gained strength, flexibility, and aerobic capacity when they engaged in strength training 3 x per week as part of their rehabilitation program. The American heart association recommends strength training as a way to reduce risk of heart disease and as a therapy for patients in cardiac rehab programs.
